***Official Church News Release***
SALT LAKE CITY 30 June 2008 The following letter was sent from the First Presidency of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to Church leaders in California to be read to all congregations on 29 June 2008:
Preserving Traditional Marriage and Strengthening Families
In March 2000 California voters overwhelmingly approved a state law providing that “Only marriage between a man and a woman is valid or recognized in California.” The California Supreme Court recently reversed this vote of the people. On November 4, 2 008, Californians will vote on a proposed amendment to the California state constitution that will now restore the March 2000 definition of marriage approved by the voters.
The Church’s teachings and position on this moral issue are unequivocal. Marriage between a man and a woman is ordained of God, and the formation of families is central to the Creator’s plan for His children. Children are entitled to be born within this bond of marriage.
A broad-based coalition of churches and other organizations placed the proposed amendment on the ballot. The Church will participate with this coalition in seeking its passage. Local Church leaders will provide information about how you may become involved in this important cause.
We ask that you do all you can to support the proposed constitutional amendment by donating of your means and time to assure that marriage in California is legally defined as being between a man and a woman. Our best efforts are required to preserve the sacred institution of marriage.
Could the church lose it's tax exempt status by becoming this involved in politics?

Not a chance the Church loses its tax exempt status. One statement on a single issue and they're going to lose their tax status, not likely.
My ward has spent about 25% of adult meetings on this topic since that letter came out. Meeting time has been used for fundraising and campaign coordination. Literature is posted throughout the building.
Calling this just "one statement" understates things a bit.
I find it amazing that in these troubled times your church would choose to focus time and resources on such a hurtful position. There are churches out there who embrace the gay and lesbian community and want to be able to marry these couples. Why can't you allow them the same freedom you have to marry couples based on your criteria? A Mormon friend of mine said that it was a way for the church to combat the perception that it still supported polygamy. If that is true, it is not fair for you to wage that war at my expense! I never did anything to you! Let me, a law-abiding, tax-paying citizen, be free to live my life in the way that I am led through my prayers to live!
There are ADS from the Superintendent of schools which are WRONG! And they LIE! Not ALL teachers oppose Prop 8! California Schools need to stop LYING to the PEOPLE!
Prop 8 is NOT about Rights! It is about RESTORING the VOICE of the PEOPLE! We already SPOKE UP! Just because 4 judges overturned the VOICE of Californian's doesn't make it right!
Yes on Prop 8 to Protect Marriage!
Homosexuality is morally and biologically WRONG!
Their ads LIE! And they need to speak the TRUTH! Please back the PEOPLE! Yes on Prop 8! Save the definition of marriage! Save our Future!
Voice of a Raisin > i hope your name is a reference to "a dream deferred" it's my favorite poem <
i dont really feel like commenting on the Prop 8 thing though everyone is so passionate about it that they make both sides look bigoted. i'm just afraid of the possible effects this could have on families and temples. i don't want gays to be hated or discriminated, but i don't want these opinions forcing a change in something as sacred as marriage.
I am gay and have first hand knowledge of Morman politics. They use a lot of money to push an agenda that never have any consequences for the mormans themselves: they simply say the consequences don't apply to them because of separation of church and state thereby dumping unjust pain and hurt on others. THIS IS JUST PLAIN WRONG.
